"Raised in England during the Victorian Age, her father provided her a good education through tutors, especially in classics and mathematics. She went on to seek a career in nursing, despite her family's disapproval. Up to that time nurses had mostly been religious, monastic women or untrained helpers of low repute. (King's College).
"Mrs Nightingale made a practice of sending the children to stay separately with their relatives. The final division, however, was brought about by their father’s plan for their education. They were expected to work long hours, and eventually Parthe rebelled, seeking her mother’s company with her guests or in the garden. Florence struggled on alone with her father. The torment that Nightingale was put through didn't stop at nursing, but also marriage. After Nightingale had grown up and become a young woman, her parents and the rest of her family had high expectations for her to grow and get married to a wealthy man who society felt was appropriate due to her family's standings. Nightingale was additionally expected to take care of her own house by cooking, cleaning, and tending to her definite children and husbands needs. Nightingale did not want to pursue the rest of her life in this way, so she started her nursing career quietly instead.
